Poghisio backs Ruto’s self praise as Kenya’s best President
By Cynthia Lodite, August 8, 2025Former Senate Majority Leader Hon. Samuel Poghisio has come out in defence of President William Ruto’s recent remarks in which he described himself as Kenya’s best President.
The Former West Pokot Senator, while speaking in an interview with K24 Amka Morning Show, stated that it was only natural for a leader to take pride in their achievements.
“Nobody wants to say they are the worst. The president had a good opportunity to say that,” Poghisho said.
In addition, Poghisho noted that Ruto’s remarks are good for his politics are he gears up for the 2027 general election, contesting for a second term.
“The President had a good opportunity to say that, he is still selling himself for the second term, he will be welcomed to say something about himself, it is good for him, it is good for his politics,” Poghisho said.
Notably, Poghisho’s remarks come amid growing public debate over Ruto’s performance two years into his first term. Poghisio insisted that the President was justified in asserting his accomplishments, citing progress made in infrastructure, healthcare, and digital transformation.
Ruto’s past remarks
President William Ruto, in a past event, boldly proclaimed himself the most accomplished leader Kenya has ever had, citing nearly three decades of political experience, academic credentials, and youthful energy as the reasons behind his performance-driven leadership style.
The head of State, speaking at State House, Nairobi on Monday, August 4, 2025, during a meeting with leaders from Tharaka Nithi County, Ruto said his unique blend of experience leaves him with “no excuse but to deliver” for the people of Kenya.
“I’ve served as an MP for 15 years and as Deputy President for 10. I’m not too old, I’m young and capable. Kenya has never had a President who is also a PhD holder, and that’s me,” Ruto said.
On his part, Ruto, reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings as a roadside chicken vendor to Commander-in-Chief, President Ruto said his lived experience had sharpened his understanding of the challenges ordinary Kenyans face.
“I was born and raised in the grassroots. I understand Kenya’s problems. There has never been a President with my level of education, knowledge, and experience. That’s why I must perform,” he declared.
In a symbolic nod to Kenya’s political legacy, Ruto said he had drawn inspiration from all four of his predecessors.
“I have Jomo Kenyatta’s courage, Moi’s understanding, Kibaki’s education, and the development plan I shared with Uhuru. With that combination, I have no excuse but to transform the nation,” Ruto said.
