Opposition: Unfit sugar has landed in Kenya ready to be repackaged and sold
By Aloys Michael, July 31, 2025The United Opposition has issued a powerful call to Parliament, urging lawmakers to stand firm against what they describe as the systematic auctioning of the country by the Ruto administration.
The opposition’s statement comes amid increasing public unease with the government’s handling of economic policy, human rights, and transparency.
In a sweeping press statement read by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka at Liberation House on Thursday, July 31, 2025, the opposition accused the government of criminal negligence, unconstitutional governance, and endangering public health and national sovereignty.
Central to their latest outcry is the revelation of a 25,000 metric tonne consignment of sugar declared unfit for human consumption at its port of origin, yet allegedly cleared by Kenyan authorities for distribution.

“This cargo has already been declared from its port of origin, unfit for human public consumption. Yet, the Ruto regime has quickly cleared it. What kind of man is this? What kind of a regime is this that puts their own reprehensible needs before that of the public’s well-being?”Kalonzo posed.
The opposition claims the sugar is en route to a Western Kenya factory where it will be repackaged and sold to unsuspecting consumers.
“We demand that this consignment be publicly condemned and destroyed,” Kalonzo said, warning of a looming public health crisis.
But the claimed sugar scandal is only one piece of what the opposition calls a “regime in decay.”
Kalonzo slammed the recent remarks by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, who announced that the government could no longer sustain free primary and secondary education.
“This is not only insensitive but unconstitutional,” Kalonzo said, pointing to Articles 43 and 53 of the Constitution, which guarantee every child the right to free basic education.

He accused the government of gutting Kenya’s future by defunding education while simultaneously creating unaccountable financial structures to mask large-scale corruption.
“They have created murky financial vehicles called Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs)… the primary objective of these vehicles is to divert public resources away from Parliament, the Auditor-General, and the people. This is shameless thievery,” he said.
Demands
The United Opposition is now demanding immediate action from Parliament: halt all illegal securitisation of future taxes, conduct an independent audit of all SPVs and restore full education capitation and commit to funding free education as per the law.
In a dramatic gesture, opposition leaders wore black armbands during the briefing, a tribute to victims of police brutality.
“It is a stark reminder of the souls that have been felled by police bullets, lives brutally lost in police stations across the country,” Kalonzo said.
“This is a criminal regime that not only resorts to wilful violence against its people but also poisons them through unfit goods. We must tell the illegitimate Ruto regime that Kenyans want education, health, and basic needs, not handouts in the name of empowerment.”
The United Opposition concluded with a call for nationwide civic resistance, insisting that the current path is not sustainable.
“We will not allow a nation built on liberation to be destroyed by deception,” Kalonzo said. “Mr. Ruto, you are on borrowed time. WanTam is not just a reality, it is an eventuality,” he asserted.
