Ndia MP orders contractor to secure abandoned Kiandai quarry after deaths of 2 children
By Bancy Lole, December 2, 2025Ndia Member of Parliament (MP) George Kariuki has directed the construction company that excavated an open quarry in Kiandai to immediately fence and secure the site after the water-filled pit claimed three lives.
The MP issued the directive after two children drowned in the quarry dam. It is said the two had gone to the site to fish before deciding to swim, when one of them got into difficulty and the other attempted to help, resulting in both losing their lives. A previous incident had already claimed another life at the same location.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, after engaging residents, Kariuki expressed deep sympathy to the affected families and stressed that the tragedy could have been avoided if the site had been properly secured.
“It is heartbreaking to lose young lives in a place that should have been fenced long ago,” he said. “I have spoken to the contractor, and they have understood the seriousness of this matter.”

Kariuki revealed that the contractor had agreed to support the affected families.
“We are working closely with the company to ensure the families receive some form of compensation to comfort them during this difficult period,” he added.
The legislator also announced plans to rehabilitate the abandoned quarry so it can benefit the local community instead of posing a danger.
“This site will not remain a hazard. We intend to rehabilitate it and turn it into something useful for the people of Kiandai,” he assured.
Kariuki further urged residents to stop vandalising or stealing fencing materials, warning that such acts compromise safety measures.
“When materials meant to secure the fence are stolen, the community is left exposed. I’m asking everyone to protect these safety measures rather than destroy them,” he cautioned.
The families have scheduled the burials for Thursday and Friday this week.
