Natembeya threatens to ditch DAP-K party

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has threatened to walk out of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), accusing external forces of undermining his efforts to rebrand the party.

Speaking at a public forum on Sunday, August 17, 2025, Natembeya warned that he would not allow the party to be hijacked by individuals he described as remnants of Ford Kenya, saying their interference is frustrating DAP-K’s vision.

Hatutaki kudanganywa tena. Sisi tunasema wale wakora wote ambao walikuwa kwa Ford Kenya  tumesema tawe. Kuna wengine walikuja pole pole  wakaingia kwa chama chetu wakaleta mambo ya  Ford Kenya hapo,” he said.

The Governor cautioned that if the wrangles persist, he will not hesitate to abandon DAP-K and seek a new political home that will advance the interests of ordinary citizens.

“Wakileta ujinga hapo, tutawaachia chama yao tuende chama ingine. Lazima tujenge nyumba ambaya itasaidia mwanachi wa Kawaida,” he added.

His remarks come a few weeks after the party resolved to refer all disputes to its Internal Disputes Resolution Committee, following reports of growing divisions that have resulted in the emergence of two rival factions within the party.

Reports indicated that Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who acts as the party’s Deputy Party Leader, is leading the liberal faction that seeks to rebrand the party to have a national appeal.

On the other hand, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa is reportedly leading the Conservative wing, which favours maintaining the party’s current structure and direction.

In a press briefing held on August 1, 2025, DAP-K Secretary General Eseli Simiyu acknowledged receiving various petitions to remove the party’s leadership, including Natembeya and Wamalwa.

He explained that all issues would be resolved by the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee, which would chart the party’s next course of action.

On his part, Wamalwa appealed to the party members to remain calm, as the disputes would be resolved democratically.

He pointed out that the party would field a candidate in Malava and Ugunja in the upcoming by-elections.

“Msiwe na wasiwasi, chama iko imara. I don’t feel threatened in any way; this is a Democratic party. “There’s nothing we can’t handle,” he added.
