The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has come out to refute claims of favouritism when hiring staff at his office.

This comes after activist Memba Ocharo moved to court to stop the hiring process in Haji’s office accusing the DPP of only shortlisting people from his community and religion for job interviews in his office.

Haji has, however, denied the favouritism claims noting that the allegations are being raised by people who want to see him out of office.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Jambo, Haji said that there is no way he could hire people from the same community or religion yet the constitution requires that public offices have an equal presentation of all communities in the country.

“These are people trying hard to bring me down. They are people on a smear campaign,” Haji said.

He explained that the list presented by the activist through his lawyer Danstan Omari as proof of the allegations was of 45 people from the Islam religion who were shortlisted for the interviews.

Out of this number, he said, not all of the candidates came from the perceived communities where Islam is the dominant religion.

He further revealed that out of the 148 candidates shortlisted for the interviews, 103 were Christians.

“Muslims are not only Somalis and Arabs… The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) is chaired by Hassan ole Naado who is not a Somali or Arab,” he said.
