Museveni hails Raila as champion of East African unity and Pan-Africanism
By Mustafa Juma, October 16, 2025Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has joined regional and global leaders in mourning the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a heartfelt statement issued via his official X account on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, night, Museveni described the late Odinga as a “freedom fighter in the tradition of his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.”
He further praised Raila’s lifelong commitment to democracy, Pan-Africanism, and regional unity.
“Fellow Ugandans, Kenyans and all Africans. It is with alot of sadness that I, today, the 15th of October, 2025, received the news of the death of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya. Rt. Hon Odinga has not been just a career politician. He has been a freedom fighter, in the tradition of his late father, Jaramogi Odinga, the 1st Vice-President of Kenya,” Museveni stated.
Museveni on relationship with Raila
Museveni said he shared ideological views and a long friendship with both Raila and his late father, noting that their political vision consistently aligned with the broader cause of African liberation and integration.
“Ideologically speaking, they have been with the patriotic and Pan-Africanist orientation. I have shared ideas with both of them. Their sentiments have been for the unity of Kenya, East Africa and Africa, including always supporting the struggles for the realization of our dream for the East African Federation,” he stated.

Upholding Raila’s legacy
He added that Odinga’s commitment to regional cooperation and his advocacy for the East African Federation placed him among Africa’s most forward-thinking leaders — a legacy future generations must uphold.
The Ugandan leader extended his condolences to President William Ruto, the People of Kenya, and the Odinga family, expressing solidarity with the nation during its time of grief.
“It is, therefore, unfortunate that he has left at this moment. It is important for the young People to fill the void left by such historical fighters for Africa’s future. I extend condolences to H.E Ruto, the People of Kenya and for Raila’s family. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Museveni wrote on X.
