Jubilee Party Vice-Chairperson David Murathe is expected to appear before EACC detectives Friday morning for grilling over his alleged involvement in the theft of KEMSA funds.

Murathe is said to have benefited from KEMSA after allegedly receiving at least Ksh4 billion for the supply of protective and medical equipment through Kilig Limited.

On Tuesday, September 1, the Jubilee Party vice-chairperson denied being a director of Kilig Limited, saying one of the founders of the company, William Gachoka, was his close friend and business partner. On the KEMSA scandal, Murathe said he did not take part in it in any way.

“We (Gachoka and I) are consultants. We do a lot of consultancy services. We have consulted for various international companies. We are setting up a lot of businesses in the free and special economic zones and we also consult for construction companies in the country,” Murathe told Waihiga Mwaura on Citizen Television’s Newsnight show.

“He (Gachoka) is my friend. He is my partner. I have known him since childhood. We are family friends since childhood. I partner with William on a lot of issues but I have not partnered with him on this one [Kemsa tender],” added Murathe.

It is alleged that despite disowning Kilig Limited, Murathe is one of the bank signatories of the company.

The anti-graft body wants to establish the link between Murathe and the embezzled KEMSA funds, which manifested in the form of overpriced merchandise.

As at 11am Friday, Murathe had not arrived at the EACC headquarters in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
