More than 2.2 million Kenyans to access medical care free of charge – Ruto

The Head of State said the move is part of the government’s continued effort to deliver Universal Health Coverage to all Kenyans, regardless of their economic status.
At State House, Nairobi, the President officially launched the SHA Sponsorship Programme, aimed at extending healthcare services to vulnerable groups across the country.
Speaking during the launch, Ruto emphasised that the initiative is a milestone in making healthcare truly universal.

“We made an irrevocable commitment to deliver Universal Health Coverage for all Kenyans, regardless of their economic status. Today, we have taken another significant step in fulfilling that pledge.
“Through the new SHA Sponsorship Programme, more than 2.2 million vulnerable Kenyans will now access medical care free of charge,” Ruto posted on X.
The SHA Sponsorship Programme is designed to ensure that vulnerable citizens, including those in low-income communities, receive medical attention without financial barriers.
Vulnerable Kenyans targeted
The initiative will cover the costs of hospital visits, consultations, and essential medical procedures, giving priority to those who cannot afford healthcare.

President Ruto stated that the government will continue identifying and bringing more of the most vulnerable citizens into the program, ensuring access to a healthcare system that is robust, responsive, and equitable.
The programme also supports local hospitals and medical facilities, promoting accessibility and improved healthcare delivery.
The launch of the SHA Sponsorship Programme is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on vulnerable families, enabling them to seek timely medical care.
By covering more than 2.2 million Kenyans, the initiative strengthens the government’s commitment to social protection and public health.
Ruto reiterated that the programme is part of broader reforms to ensure healthcare is available to every Kenyan, regardless of income, and that similar initiatives will continue to expand nationwide.
