Interior minister Fred Matiang’i has declared Monday, May 25 a public holiday.
In a Gazette Notice dated May 20, Matiang’i said Kenyans, particularly Muslims, will celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 2 (1) of Public Holidays Act, declares that Monday, the 25th May, 2020, shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” reads the Gazette Notice Number 3651 of 2020.
Idd-ul-Fitr is a three-day festival that follows the end of the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims are expected to fast and pray. Fasting is replaced by feasting during Id ul Fitr, and the very name of the holiday means “Festival of Breaking the Fast.”
