Activist Kasmuel McOure has revealed the reason for his aborted attempt at joining protesters agitating for an end to the increasing cases of femicide.

In a statement on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, McOure indicated that while he continues to press for an end to femicide in the country, he bowed out of the protests after receiving a cold reception from protesters who showed him that his presence was unwanted.

The statement came after videos emerged online of the once revered activist getting booed when he attempted to join a group of protesters.

“I marched today, got booed, but still showed up. I left because some protesters felt my presence wasn’t appropriate. I didn’t see the need to centre myself in today’s march after such clear feedback. This is a cause I’ve always supported and stood up for, even when it drew harsh criticism back in March,” McOure said.

McOure’s woes

McOure received flak for his move to join a political party despite his fellow youthful protesters agitating for a party-less outfit to demand accountability and good governance.

This was after he joined the Raila Odinga-led ODM party where he was tasked with mobilizing youthful members into ODM.

Justifying his decision to join the party, the self-styled revolutionary on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, stated that he joined the Orange party to become a part of something greater and be at the forefront of change.

“My purpose is simple, yet profound. I am here to stand in the ranks of the youth league of the largest, most consistent, and most organized political party in our nation and beyond,” McOure said.

Adding: “It is my privilege to be mentored by the most influential, steadfast, and visionary leader this country has ever known. Raila Odinga is a man who has dedicated his life to the struggle for justice, for freedom, for the future of this land.”

Protest victims

During the end of the 16 Days of Activism against Femicide, police officers teargassed a section of protesters who were engaged in the activism.

During the fracas with police, Amnesty International executive director Irungu Houghton was also arrested alongside other protesters.

The 16 days of activism were sponsored to the tune of Ksh100 million by President William Ruto, who urged an end to crimes against women.

“Matters psychological support and safe spaces for women and children are a priority in my office. Through the women’s rights advisor, we are launching a safe home safe space campaign during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence that will start on November 25, 2024,” Ruto said on November 20, 2024.
