Mbeere North by-election: Muturi credits Gachagua with opposition strategy
By David Nthua, September 15, 2025Former Attorney General and Ex-CS for Public Service Justin Muturi on Monday, September 15, 2025, saluted the Democracy for Citizens’ Party Rigathi Gachagua, alias Riggy G, ahead of the Mbeere North minipoll.
Speaking to Kameme TV’s Gatonye Wa Mbugua in Nairobi, Justin Muturi narrated how honest Riggy G summoned his allies and revealed to them the intention to have the opposition field a single candidate.

Muturi praises Gachagua’s honesty
In his message, Muturi revealed that it took Gachagua to conduct an opinion poll to get results that veteran Mbeere Benga musician Newton Kariuki, alias Karish, was way ahead of other opposition candidates.

“I want to thank Riggy G, Rigathi. Contrary to those who are speaking anyhow without knowledge, Riggy G summoned his party honchos and told them that, as the opposition, we had decided we would get one candidate. I want us to do something scientific.
“He commissioned a group… They did an opinion poll about the perception of voters. I also knew, and I had told him that nobody was ahead of my candidate, Newton Karish,” Muturi said.

He added that when Riggy G received the poll report, he immediately called his allies and acknowledged the results. “He told them that it was hard to go against science.

Newton Kariuki leads polls.
He told them there was no need to have two candidates belonging to a single camp. I thank him for accepting to endorse my candidate because we would be pulling in the right direction,” Muturi said.

Political analysts have described the move as a rare example of strategic unity in opposition politics, especially ahead of tightly contested by-elections.
Rigathi Gachagua’s decision to rely on empirical data before endorsing a candidate is seen as a model for transparent and fair political processes.

The Mbeere North minipoll, slated to take place in November, will now see Newton Kariuki as the consolidated opposition candidate, increasing his chances of winning against rivals from other parties.
Muturi’s public acknowledgement of Gachagua’s honesty also sends a strong message to party supporters that cooperation, backed by data, can yield stronger electoral outcomes.
As campaigns intensify, both Muturi and Gachagua are expected to continue rallying support behind Kariuki, ensuring that the opposition presents a united front.
All the same, Muturi’s praise for Gachagua is likely to resonate across political circles, highlighting the importance of honesty, science-based decision-making, and unity in modern Kenyan politics.
