A 30-year-old man was killed by a mob in Mbooni East after assaulting his estranged wife who is fighting for her life at the Makueni Referral Hospital.
The Saturday 11 pm incident occurred at Kyamavui village in Mithumo sub-location where the deceased, Boniface Kivuku Mutua, took a panga and slashed his estranged wife Purity Muthoki Makau, 24, on her hands and on the head.
The woman raised the alarm and members of the public trooped to her rescue, stoning the man to death as he fled from the in-law’s house.
According to the police, the woman had returned to her parent’s home after her marriage of three years in Yatta, Machakos County hit the rocks.
The deceased called his father-in-law on Friday and informed him of his impromptu visit. He arrived at his in-law’s home at about 8 pm after which they had dinner.
After the evening meal, the father-in-law left the couple and went to a neighbour’s house only to hear cries of help from his daughter.
However, on reaching his house, Nicolas Makau Munywoki found that his son-in-law had locked the door from the inside.
But the man opened the door when the villagers trooped to the home and tried to flee.
The angry locals caught up with him and stoned him to death, said Makueni County Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipeyan.
The body of the deceased was taken to Tawa Funeral Home for preservation awaiting post-mortem.
According to Dr. Athman Lugogo, a medical officer at the Makueni hospital, the woman is in a stable condition.
Dr. Lugogo said that she was taken to theatre and had her two hands amputated.
“We have received the patient at the wee hours of the morning, both her wrists had deep cuts and were hanging only with a thin flesh of skin hence the amputation,” he said.
The medical officer also noted that the patient will undergo counseling due to the trauma.
