Authorities are holding in custody a middle-aged man who head-butted a police officer at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, January 8.
Daniel Njonjo Mwangi became unruly after pleading not guilty to the offence of attempting to commit a felony.
Senior Resident Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe was preparing to free the suspect on cash bail, when he shouted: “Afadhali nikufe, sina pesa (I would rather die than secure my freedom through bail. I don’t have money).”
A police officer’s attempt to handcuff Mwangi was met with hostility, as he [Mwangi] head-butted the law enforcement agent. Mwangi continued to vow that he won’t pay any money in exchange for his freedom.
He was, however, subdued by at least five court orderlies, who bundled him into the court holding cells.
Magistrate Nzibe, nonetheless, set the conditions for Mwangi’s release, which included posting a cash bail of Ksh30, 000.
Mwangi, K24 Digital understands, was taken into custody after he said he won’t raise the cash bail.
The suspect is accused of attempting to commit robbery on Kimathi Street in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 7 at 12:46pm.
Police say they found Mwangi in possession of a rungu and kitchen knife, weapons, they believe, were to be used by the suspect to commit the said-crime.
Mwangi told the court that he was arrested by police while on his way to a funeral, and that there was no proof that he was planning to engage in robbery.
The suspect claimed that the cops clobbered and pushed him into a sewage tank before removing and hand-cuffing him.
In a report filed at Central Police Station, cops who arrested Mwangi say they grew suspicious of his motive, when they met him on Kimathi Street on Tuesday.
Upon approaching the suspect, Mwangi allegedly ran away, forcing the cops to pursue him, police said.
The law enforcement officers claim Mwangi threw himself into a pool containing wastewater.
They, however, managed to subdue him, and found a rungu and kichen knife on him, police said.
