Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been released after spending the night at Mumias Police Station, his lawyer Nelson Havi said on Tuesday morning.

Havi said that the Director of Public Prosecutions said that charges against Senator Malala lacked merit.

Shortly after his release, Malala told a crowd of supporters that was agitating for his freedom that he will not be intimidated to change his stance on the contentious Division of Revenue Bill.

The senator was whisked from Kitengala, Kajiado County to Mumias Police Station in Kakamega following his arrest outside his house.

His arrest came after a 10-hour standoff with the police as he holed himself up in house demanding police inform him of the reason for his arrest.
