The top candidate in the 2019 KCPE exams, Andy Michael Munyiri, scored 440 marks, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha announced on Monday.
Three other students tied in the second position with 439 marks, namely Flavian Onyango, June Jeptoo and Sean Ndungu.
A total of 1,088,986 candidates sat their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations in October.
In the 2019 exams, students performed better than last year in English, Kiswahili and Sign Language, with female candidates dominating their male counterparts in the languages.
Education stakeholders released the results on Monday afternoon at the Kenya National Examinations Council headquarters in Nairobi.
“We did not see fake examination papers usually bought by parents. I want to say that our daughters and parents have succeeded in reducing teenage pregnancies,” said Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.
Education CS Magoha said the ministry will expedite the placement of students to high schools, with the exercise set to start as soon as possible.
“The Government will provide 9,000 scholarships. In his wisdom this afternoon that part of those scholarships must go to slums in cities: Mombasa, Kisumu, Nairobi, Kisumu and others,” said Prof Magoha.
On Monday, Teachers Service Commission chief executive said they will investigate 56 teachers who were involved in exam irregularities.
“We ask our teachers to ensure high standard of teaching despite the conditions. Teachers should also be given good terms and conditions for teaching even as we demand a lot from them,” said Ms Macharia.
