The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has urged parents and education stakeholders to embark on the registration of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA).

The national examiner noted that the registration of candidates at the two levels of study would stop on February 28, 2025, and that stakeholders must act within the next two weeks as of Saturday, February 15, 2025.

In January 2025, KNEC advised parents and heads of institutions with learners following the regular pathway to register their Grade 6 students for KPSEA afresh through its online registration portal.

Eligible candidates

Candidates for the evaluation should be eligible students in the respective institutions that are presenting them, the examination council added.

“Registration of ghost candidates constitutes an assessment malpractice, which attracts sanctions, including de-registration of the school as a KNEC assessment centre,” the notice read in part.

“Correction of candidates’ biodata must be effected during registration (where applicable), to ensure accuracy of the data submitted, including the following: Correct spelling and order of learners’ names as documented in their birth certificates, gender, year of birth and citizenship,” KNEC added.

Additionally, the examination council mandated that candidate transfers be completed prior to the registration portal’s closing on February 28, 2025.

“Eligible KPSEA candidates who are not registered in the Grade 6 portal must be registered in the Grade 6 portal first, to be assigned an Assessment Number. Learners without an Assessment Number will not be able to register for KPSEA, since the number will be mandatory. Upon successful assignment of the Assessment Number in the Grade 6 portal, the Heads of Institutions will be enabled to register the candidates,” KNEC explained.

” Head of institutions must confirm from their school portals that the School Based Assessment (SBA) scores for Grades 4 and 5 are uploaded, for all candidates registered for KPSEA,” the notice added.

KILEA guidelines

According to KNEC, once the student’s preparedness to take the test has been confirmed, the teachers who are working with them will determine whether students who are following the stage-based pathway should be registered for KILEA.

The institutions will register the learners through the KILEA Registration portal.

KNEC made it clear that the government will pay assessment fees for all learners in public and private schools.

However, candidates who are non-citizens would be required to pay Ksh750 for the assessment through the E-citizen platform, KNEC maintained.

“In line with the provisions of Sections 25, 26 and 29 of the Data Protection Act of 2019, all Centre Managers are requested to ensure that parents/guardians of the KPSEA candidates consent to the collection of personal data of their learners, inform them that the data collected will be solely used for the purpose of conducting the Assessment and that KNEC will adhere to all the regulations and requirements for data protection.

“The candidates will sign the Nominal Rolls and other accountability documents after confirming the accuracy of the data.”
