Lawyers raise thousands of shillings, Bonga points to cushion out of work young advocates

Lawyers have set up a kitty to cushion young advocates who are out of work because of Covid-19 which has hit hard law firms.

Most affected law firms are sole proprietorships while most young lawyers have been forced to take unpaid leave.

Courts were ordered closed immediately after the first coronavirus cases was announced but lawyers are advocates are hopeful things will looks as sessions resume.

The kitty will go towards meeting essential needs for the young advocates such as rent and shopping.

So far, lawyers have raised over Sh150,000 in M-Pesa and Sh40,000 in Safaricom Bonga points, which are now being redeemed for cash and shopping.

According to the contribution’s list seen by K24 Digital, newly-elected LSK President Nelson Havi has donated Sh10,000 while his deputy, Caroline Kamende, who initiated the fundraiser has chipped in Sh5,000.

Shopping vouchers have also been donated.
