By , June 18, 2024

The Inspector General (IG) of Police Japhet Koome hosted a delegation of Haitian police officials at the National Police Service headquarters on the morning of Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

According to the statement by the National Police Service, the parties held discussions in line with the pending deployment of Kenyan policemen to Haiti where the IG assured the Haitian delegation of Kenya’s commitment to the mission.

“The Haitian Police delegation and the IG held discussions regarding the upcoming NPS-led Multilateral Security Support Mission to Haiti. The Inspector General Koome assured the Haitian Police that the National Police Service remains committed to collaboration in the mission,” the statement read in part.

The Haitian delegation will meet different commanders within the NPS during their visit as the deployment of police to the island nation hangs in balance with the high court set to make a ruling on a lawsuit by Thirdway Alliance Kenya leader Ekuru Aukot and Miruru Waweru.

The lawsuit by Aukot and Waweru seeks to challenge the deployment of the forces on grounds of contempt of court citing a January order by the High Court that stopped the deployment on the basis that there was no reciprocal agreement between the two countries to authorize the UN-backed mission.

The United Nations Security Council authorized the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti on October 2, 2023, following widespread gang violence in the country.

The subsequent killing of former President Jovenel Moise at his residence in the capital of Port-au-Prince was preceded by widespread violence and lawlessness that plague the country to date.

An advance team tasked with inspecting the construction of the Kenyan base in Haiti is reported to be back in the country as the deployment looms.
