KNH clarifies on failed kidney transplant after patient’s concern

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding a kidney transplant that failed, leading to its removal.

Speaking through an official statement posted on their X account on Monday, August 11, 2025, KNH explained that the patient was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2022 and had been undergoing haemodialysis at a private facility before being admitted for the transplant procedure in February 2025.

The hospital detailed that the patient and her donor brother underwent professional counselling and a multidisciplinary team evaluation before the transplant surgery, which took place on February 12, 2025.

Unfortunately, after the surgery, the transplanted kidney did not start functioning properly, and further assessments revealed reduced blood flow to the organ.

Complication leads to removal

The hospital stated that, following international medical protocols, doctors took the patient back to theatre for further assessment.

KNH said they found that the kidney was not viable and had to remove it to safeguard the patient’s health.

Laboratory tests later confirmed that the loss was due to a blood clot in the transplanted kidney, a rare but recognised complication in kidney transplantation worldwide.

William Sigilai, KNH’s Chief Executive Officer, stated, “While this complication is uncommon, occurring in up to 8 per cent of cases worldwide, it is a recognised medical risk in kidney transplantation.”

The donor brother recovered well and was discharged on routine follow-up, while the recipient resumed dialysis treatment and continued with regular clinical reviews.

Hospital reassures public and family

The hospital defended itself from the issue of expertise, indicating they had successfully performed 21 out of 22 kidney transplants.

Sigilai added, “We understand the disappointment and frustration of the family and remain available to offer further clarification. KNH remains committed to delivering quality, specialised healthcare to all our patients.”

The hospital’s statement follows concerns raised by the patient and her family, who filed a police report seeking answers regarding the transplant failure.
