Kindiki asks Mt Kenya not to repeat 2022 poll mistake

By , July 31, 2025

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged the Mt Kenya region not to repeat the same mistake it made in the 2022 poll, which is electing leaders who, according to him, only remembered the region after leaving power.

Speaking during a public event at his rural home in Iunduni, Tharaka Nithi County, on Thursday, July 31, 2025, Kindiki made it clear that moving forward, the region must hold politicians accountable before voting them back into office.

Saa ile, wewe ndio uko kwa kiti na hakuna kitu umesaidia sisi nayo. Lakini ukitoka kwa kiti, ndio unakua shujaa ya kututetea,” Kindiki said in a blunt jab seemingly directed at his predecessor.

He challenged residents to demand development track records before re-electing leaders in 2027, adding, “Ile time tutakuja hapa kuomba kura, nataka mtuulize, bwana DP, tuambie kile mlitufanyia hapa.”

Condemns violence during protests

Kindiki also condemned the recent protests in the Mt Kenya region that were marked by violence, destruction of property and looting of petrol stations. He asked the youth and political mobilisers to avoid chaos, reminding them that peace is vital for long-term development.

Hiyo wakati (2027 poll) ukifika nawaomba tusifanye makosa tena. Kwa sababu kufanya kosa si kosa — kosa ni kurudia,” he said.

His remarks come days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was criticised by Trade CS Rebecca Miano and others for allegedly inciting unrest in the region.

Economic and political strategist David Ndii also appeared to throw shade at Gachagua, saying he had a chance to help the region while in power but failed to deliver.

Unajua hao watu walituona usiku, hawakutuona mchana,” Kindiki added, making it clear that leaders who were silent in power cannot now claim to be heroes of the people.

All the same, it remains to be seen how DP Kithure Kindiki will manage to counter Rigathi Gachagua’s political influence in the Mt Kenya region, which appears to be on a steady rise since his impeachment in October 2024 and his recently formed DCP. Gachagua is working with the likes of Dr Fred Matiang’i to make Ruto a one-term President in the 2027 poll.

So far, Gachagua has not responded to Kindiki’s comments at the time of writing this story.
