By , August 15, 2025

The Kericho County Assembly erupted into chaos as Members of County Assembly (MCAs) engaged in physical confrontations, disrupting proceedings during the impeachment voting of Governor Erick Mutai.

Moments after the votes began to be counted on Friday, August 15, 2025, dramatic scenes unfolded, with screams and shouts of MCAs being heard throughout the assembly hall.

Amid the melee, the Speaker struggled to maintain order throughout the tumultuous session, repeatedly shouting “Order! Order! Order, Honourable members” as the assembly descended into pandemonium.

Despite the chaos, the Speaker managed to announce the final tally of the impeachment motion against the governor.

“I now declare the results: Yes 33, Nays 0, Abstain 0, and the motion is passed and the governor stands impeached by the county assembly of Kericho,” the Speaker declared amid continued screams from lawmakers.

Physical confrontations erupt

The situation deteriorated further after the results announcements, with violent scuffles breaking out between opposing groups of MCAs.

Some members were seen running around the assembly hall, while others celebrated, and some were visibly frustrated at the outcome.

“There being no other order of business, this assembly stands adjourned,” the Speaker announced, but his words were drowned out by screams as a physical fight erupted between two MCAs.

This prompted the sergeants-at-arms to intervene, separating the two groups of lawmakers, who were locked in heated confrontations.

The Speaker was forced to leave the assembly chamber as one of the opposing groups tried to attack him, as the violent altercations continued.

The Sergeant-at-arms later managed to separate the factions as the scuffle began to subside.

Mutai impeached

This marks Mutai’s second impeachment attempt, following a previous case in 2024 when senators voted to dismiss the impeachment motion due to a procedural technicality.

In that vote, 34 senators opted to throw out the motion, while 10 voted in favour of proceeding with the quasi-judicial trial against Mutai.

During today’s session, Mutai was impeached after a decisive vote, with 33 out of 47 MCAs supporting the impeachment.

The MCAs accused Mutai of gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources.
