Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha on Monday afternoon released the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
The announcement ceremony was held at Mitihani House in Caledonia, off Dennis Pritt Road, Nairobi.
Over 700,000 candidates sat for the exams that began in March and ended in April.
380,327 (50.9 per cent) of the candidates who sat for exams were males while 366,8384 (49.10) were females.
Only 15 counties register more females than males.
The CS had earlier briefed President Uhuru Kenyatta on the results at State House before he officially released them to the public.
Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua, Early Learning and Basic Education PS Dr Julius Jwan, and TSC CEO Nancy Macharia and her KNEC counterpart Mercy Karogo were present.
President Kenyatta congratulated the 2020 KCSE candidates for a great performance despite the challenges posed by Covid-19.
He also thanked the education sector stakeholders for the smooth administration of the examinations.
KNEC CEO Karogo termed the administration and marking of the exams a success despite earlier protests from examiners last week, who were demanding better pay.
A total of 27,135 examiners took part in the marking exercise.
A total of 31 subjects were examined in 77 papers.
Kenya had 10,567 examination centres countrywide.
PS Jwan heaped praise on teachers countrywide for their great work and dedication in ensuring learners are better prepared for exams.
Their contributions towards ensuring the safety of learners in the light of the deadly pandemic were also recognized.
TSC CEO Macharia also lauded teachers for their dedication and mentioned 7 examiners involved in an accident on their way home from the exam marking centre in Nairobi. She wished them a quick recovery.
She reminded teachers to utilize the gracious opportunity granted by President Uhuru to them vaccinated regardless of their age.
The TSC boss revealed 37 teachers have lost their lives to the pandemic and they include 24 principals, 3 deputies principals and 10 classroom teachers.
He reminded teachers to uphold exam integrity adding that their profession is noble and requires sincerity in handling exams.
One teacher found guilty of an offence has already been convicted by court and Machaira says disciplinary action is on course to see the person deregistered as a professional.
CS Magoha in his address said the whole exams process was a success even though reports of exam irregularities emerged during the testing period.
“Their battle was fought with resilience and ended with grace,” Magoha said.
He expressed gratitude for all stakeholders involved in the process saying their contributions was a strong pillar in the success of the 2020 KCSE exams.
CS Magoha said the government has laid an elaborate plan for career progression for all candidates who sat for the exams.
“Our government has ensured that every child in our country has a chance to pursue a career, and every child deserves a chance and the chance shall be given. We must not leave any learner behind,” Magoha.
He said Grade five roll-out will be done in July for all schools countrywide.
On exam performance, 893 candidates scored an A Plain. 143,140 candidates score C+ and above representing a 19 per cent increase.
