Karua questions billions splashed in churches amid Ruto’s corruption remarks

The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has questioned the huge sums of money splashed in churches by politicians amid President William Ruto’s corruption remarks.

In a statement shared on her official X account on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Karua said that it is ironic for Ruto to question how an individual can access Ksh 150, yet some politicians are splashing billions as political handouts.

In addition, Karua said that Kenya continues to suffer because citizens elect leaders without demanding accountability or integrity, noting that many of those entrusted with office are unprepared or unwilling to serve honourably, leading to repeated scandals, loss of billions, and the suffering of ordinary Kenyans.

“When Ruto questions how one can access KSh150M “that belongs to the county,” we ask much bigger questions: Where do the billions casually splashed in churches, campaigns, and political handouts really come from?”Karua said.

“The truth is, Kenya keeps paying the price of leaders we put in office without demanding true accountability or proven integrity. Too often, individuals are entrusted with positions they are neither prepared for nor committed to serve honorably, and the result is always the same: scandal after scandal, billions lost, and ordinary Kenyans left to suffer.”

She further added that leadership should not be about selective outrage, stressing that corruption is not only about what opponents do but also about what happens under one’s watch.

Furthermore, Karua added that anyone in charge of a department, ministry, or the nation cannot claim ignorance while billions disappear, emphasising that accountability means taking full responsibility for everything that happens under their leadership

“Leadership cannot be about selective outrage. Corruption is not only what your opponents do; it is also about what happens under your watch. If you are in charge of a department, a ministry, or a nation, you cannot claim ignorance while billions vanish. Accountability means taking full responsibility for what happens under your leadership.”

She further urged Ruto to start the accountability from the top if he is serious about fighting corruption.

“If we are serious about ending corruption, then accountability must start at the very top: 1. Leaders must have demonstrated integrity and proven competence before they are entrusted with public office. 2. Budgets and decisions must be open to scrutiny. 3. Assets must be declared, and unexplained wealth must no longer be excused. The tide of corruption in Kenya is strong, but we cannot allow it to define us,” she said.
