Kalonzo: This regime has admitted guilt by agreeing to compensate victims
By Aloys Michael, August 15, 2025Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has delivered a bold indictment of the Kenya Kwanza administration, asserting that by agreeing to compensate victims o anti-government protests, the regime has effectively admitted its guilt.
Kalonzo also dismissed the recently established joint task force by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga as nothing more than a political cover-up aimed at whitewashing the government’s responsibility for the violence.
In a statement on his X account on Friday, August 15, 2025, Kalonzo condemned the task force as lacking credibility, insisting that those responsible for the violence cannot credibly investigate themselves.
“The question we and the majority of Kenyans are asking is: how can the perpetrators who gave the shoot-to-kill-to-shoot-in-the-leg decree be the judges of their own already admitted crimes?” Kalonzo asked.
He termed the Senior Presidential Advisor Makau Mutua-led task force a mockery of justice, arguing that it serves to shield the regime from accountability for what he described as state-sanctioned brutality.
“By agreeing to compensate victims, the regime has already admitted its guilt and complicity in the murder of hundreds of Kenyans, maiming of thousands, and abductions of many,” the statement read.
Kalonzo further accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of suppressing dissent through unconstitutional means, calling the violent crackdown on protestors and human rights defenders a dangerous erosion of civil liberties.
“Silencing citizens by state overreach and suppression of opposition is unconstitutional. Enough is enough,” he said.
The Wiper boss applauded Chief Justice Martha Koome’s recent defence of civic space that is under threat following a lack of accountability in abductions and extra-judicial killings.
“You cannot criminalise human rights defenders!” he exclaimed.

Independent inquiry?
In contrast to the government’s task force, Kalonzo announced that the Opposition had established its independent inquiry, the People’s Restorative Justice Commission (PRJC), on June 25, 2025.
“This people-led initiative, chaired by Speaker Emeritus JB Muturi and commissioners Dan Maanzo, Fred Ogolla, Asha Bashir, and Nerima Wako, is working around the clock to restore dignity, rebuild lives, and hold perpetrators accountable for crimes against humanity,” Kalonzo said.
He noted that the PRJC is already receiving international recognition for its grassroots-driven model of justice and truth-telling, positioning it as a legitimate alternative to the state’s process.
Kalonzo vowed that the Opposition would continue fighting for full accountability, not just financial compensation, and that justice for victims and their families remains non-negotiable.
“This is not about politics, it is about justice, dignity, and healing for a wounded nation,” he emphasised.
The Wiper leader urged Kenyans and the international community to support the PRJC, saying it represents the true will of the people and not a political manoeuvre designed to deflect blame.
