Kakamega County Health minister Collins Matemba has confirmed that a student of Lureko Girls Day and Boarding Secondary died on Sunday from breathing complications.
Speaking to K24 Digital on Monday, November 16, Matemba said that they were not able to ascertain what led to the Form Four student’s death but confirmed that her parents had coronavirus disease but were treated and later tested negative.
The Health minister said that her death cannot yet be attributed to coronavirus disease just because the parents had it.
He said that the student died while receiving treatment at Life Care Hospital in Bungoma where she was taken after developed breathing problems.
“The girl was first treated at St Mary’s Hospital in Mumias without much improvement and was later transferred to Life Care Hospital,” said Matemba.
The Health official said that by the time the student had passed on, doctors were yet to take samples for testing.
The county has embarked on contact tracing as the school also serves day students.
However, Matemba denied claims spread on social media that over 10 students from the school have contracted coronavirus disease.
Meanwhile, nine students of St Peter’s Mumias and one at Mukumu Girls High School have tested positive for coronavirus.
Three St Peter’s Mumias teachers have also been put on home-based care after testing positive for the virus.
The students are receiving treatment at Mumias Level Four Hospital, Likuyani Hospital and one is recovering at home.
The girl at Mukumu Girls High School is said to have escaped from St Elizabeth Hospital where she was receiving treatment.
Her parents said that she has not yet reached home and they are still looking for her.
