Itumbi proposes Kenya–Tanzania friendly match in Jamhuri Day programme
By Cy Muganda, August 23, 2025The Head of Presidential Special Projects & Creative Economy, Dennis Itumbi, has proposed that a football match between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Tanzania’s Taifa Stars be included in this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.
In a statement shared on his X account on August 22, 2025, Itumbi suggested the fixture could enhance the December 12 independence celebrations while strengthening regional football ties.
“As part of Jamhuri Celebrations, I propose a friendly match between Harambee Stars and Taifa Stars,” Itumbi stated.
Home and away fixture
The government official suggested the fixture should be played both home and away, potentially creating a mini-series between the East African neighbours.
Itumbi acknowledged the competitive rivalry between the two countries, suggesting it would translate into an entertaining spectacle for fans.
“Played Home and Away. Our banter would translate to a good game,” he noted,
Additionally, Itumbi extended well-wishes to Uganda’s national team, the Cranes, ahead of their CHAN quarterfinal clash, emphasising regional unity within the East African Community.
“I pray for the Cranes…they belong to all of us kwa Jumuia ama vipi,” he stated.

End of the road
Itumbi’s proposal comes after Kenya’s run at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) competition came to an end on Friday, August 22, 2025, after a narrow defeat to Madagascar in the penalty shootout at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Making their debut in the tournament, Harambee Stars initially seemed poised for a historic semi-final berth after Alphonce Omija’s powerful header gave them the lead shortly after the break.
However, moments later, a strike from striker Ryan Ogam was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
Madagascar equalised in the 68th minute when Fenohasina Razafimanana converted a penalty after a foul in the box, sending the match into extra time.
With neither side able to score during extra time, the game was decided by penalties, where Madagascar held their nerve to win 4-3.
On the other hand, Tanzania was edged out by Morocco, losing 1-0, which ended their CHAN campaign.
