Isiolo–Meru leaders warn governor of one-term fate over poor service delivery

A section of the Isiolo–Meru community has voiced concern over what it terms rampant bad governance within the county administration, accusing local leaders of mismanagement and failure to deliver on key development promises.

Speaking during a community meeting held over the weekend, the group also criticised a faction within the community that continues to praise the county government, claiming the group is misleading the governor by downplaying the challenges faced by residents.

“It is unfortunate that some of our people have chosen to praise the county leadership instead of speaking the truth. They are doing so for their own interests while the majority continue to suffer,” said Paul Mugambi, one of the community leaders who attended the meeting.

Everlyne Nyomoo, another member of the dissenting group, cited poor infrastructure, lack of clean water, inadequate health facilities, and rising unemployment as evidence of poor service delivery, despite the county receiving substantial allocations from the national government.

The group’s chairman, Mr Stephen Mworia, urged the county leadership to embrace transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in governance, saying that meaningful development can only be achieved when all community members are involved in decision-making processes.

“The people telling you that the community is happy are your county employees. They are only protecting their jobs and will never tell you the truth,” Mr Mworia said. “Some of those praising the governor are of questionable character. When elections come in October 2027, politicians will know the truth about those who misled them.”

Godfrey Mutiiria, who expressed displeasure over claims that members of the opposing group are not registered voters in Isiolo County, dismissed the assertions as false, saying he lives and votes in Isiolo.

Mr Mugambi added that a few months ago, the Isiolo County Assembly had attempted to impeach the governor for alleged non-performance, insisting that little progress has been seen since. “If the governor fails to deliver on his promises, he will only serve one term,” he warned.

The group further called on oversight institutions, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to investigate alleged cases of mismanagement and misuse of public funds within the county.

Sheilah Kajuju questioned claims by the pro-government faction that over 68 boreholes had been constructed, stating that their community had not seen even one in their area.

However, the faction supporting the county government defended its record, saying the administration has made “significant progress” in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. They cited ongoing road and water projects as evidence of development efforts.

The widening rift within the Isiolo–Meru community highlights growing divisions over the county’s leadership, as residents debate whether the local administration has lived up to its promises since taking office.
