Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai on Sunday, May 9 launched an investigation over a viral video showing a female police officer lamenting against discrimination and harassment.

On his Twitter page, the IG confirmed that the officer is attached to the Traffic Department in Mombasa County.

” I have learned of a video trending on social media where a female Police Officer is captured lamenting against unfair treatment and sexual harassment. The officer is attached to the Traffic Department in Mombasa County. She had complained against a merchant hence subjected to an inquiry by @DCI_Kenya officers resulting in a departmental action. I have directed the Gender and Children Directorate to independently investigate the matter and give a report within 7 days. ” Mutyamba wrote.

The police officer in the viral video expressed her frustrations noting that she is having it rough and that she had written several resignation letters to her bosses without success.

“Sir, kindly allow me to resign peacefully from the police officer post because I can succeed elsewhere. I will work as a civilian and I won’t mind,” she said.

She went further to assert that she is ready to resign even without pay, so long as IG accepts her resignation.

This comes days after Interior CS Fred Matiang’i stated that police officers will not be allowed to marry each other or have affairs or romantic relationships with other officers.

“We do not expect you to leave here and go having affairs with the officers you manage. One of you will have to leave,” CS Matiang’i said.

Interior CS gave these directives during the opening of the cadets’ officer programme at the National Police College, Kiganjo in Nyeri County on April 30.
