‘I have no apologies to make’ – Ruto brags about his status as one of ODM’s founding members
By Paulette Mboga, November 16, 2025President William Ruto spoke about his role as a founding member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), insisting he owes no apologies to anyone for his political involvement in the party.
He made the remarks during the ODM founders’ dinner held in Mombasa on Saturday, November 15, 2025, as part of the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

The dinner, hosted at the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort, brought together the original members who formed ODM two decades ago.
The event marked a rare reunion of the political group’s founding members and highlighted the legacy of the late Raila Odinga. The celebrations are part of a three-day programme reflecting on ODM’s journey since its formation in 2005.
Ruto’s political journey
Speaking at the event, Ruto said, “Number 1, I am a founding member of ODM, and I have no apologies to make to anybody. It is a historical fact. And I was not just a founder member. I was at the centre, at the heart of the formation of ODM.”
He said that his contributions to the party were central to its establishment and development.

Ruto also shared insights into the people who influenced his political career. He said, “Number 2, two people have really influenced my political journey.
One is former president Moi, because I first became a member of parliament in KANU. It was a difficult exercise then because I remember when I ran for the first time, I was not a favourite of KANU at that time, but I won anyway.”

He highlighted how his early experiences in KANU shaped his political strategies and leadership style.
