Heavy rains to persist in Nairobi, Rift Valley and Coast – Kenya Met
By Paulette Mboga, October 5, 2025The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that the ongoing rains experienced in many parts of the country are expected to continue over the coming days.
In its latest weather update for Sunday, October 5, 2025, the agency said rainfall will persist across the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coastal region, and the Rift Valley.

According to the department, some of these areas will experience heavy rainfall ranging between 20 and 50 millimetres, which may be accompanied by gusty winds.
Residents have been urged to stay alert, as flooding could occur even in areas where it has not rained directly, due to runoff from higher regions.
The advisory further cautioned Kenyans to avoid crossing moving water and to remain indoors during thunderstorms. The department also warned that strong winds could cause damage to trees, power lines, and weak structures, urging residents to take the necessary precautions.

Yellow warning as rains intensify
Earlier this week, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a Yellow Warning, indicating that heavy rainfall between 20 and 50 millimetres – and in some cases above 50 millimetres within 24 hours – was expected from Friday, October 3, to Sunday, October 5.
The rains are expected to intensify and spread to more regions, including parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Highlands (both east and west of the Rift Valley), Nairobi, and Northwestern Kenya.
The agency said the ongoing rains could lead to localised flooding, reduced visibility on roads, and difficult driving conditions.
Residents living in flood-prone areas have also been urged to move to safer ground and avoid sheltering under trees or near power lines during thunderstorms.
The department added that gusty winds could pose a danger to fishermen and small boat operators along the coast and Lake Victoria Basin, advising them to exercise caution.
The rains come as a relief in some parts of the country that had been experiencing dry conditions, but authorities have cautioned that the public should remain alert and prepared for potential disruptions caused by heavy downpours.
