Police in Mombasa are hunting at least two men who stormed a cyber café in Mvita on Thursday, February 11 and shot dead a client, injuring two others in the process.

Eye witnesses told K24 Digital that the attackers, who were more than two, arrived at the cyber café in Kaloleni area near Memon on a motorbike at 2:30pm, and marked three clients for harming.

The aggressors fired bullets at their three targets, killing one and injuring the other two. The attackers, thereafter, escaped on a motorbike, police said.

One of the injured persons has been identified as Sadat Salim, a political activist in Mombasa who runs a YouTube page known as Wapwani Amkeni (Coastal region people, let us stand up to oppression). On the platform, Salim urges his followers to rise against political, economic and social oppression by elected leaders in the region.

Salim and the other injured victim were taken to Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa, where they are receiving treatment.

The murdered victim’s remains were taken to the Coast Provincial General Hospital morgue. Little is known about the deceased, though it is alleged he worked closely with Salim.

Police are investigating a possible assassination plot believed to have been funded by politicians who were not amused by Salim and friends’ hard-hitting social media posts.

Mombasa County Police Commander Stephen Matu told K24 Digital that they will do everything possible to track down the killers.

“We must arrest and prosecute the murderers. We will smoke them out from their hideouts, no matter where they are,” said Matu.
