Nurse and advocate for healthcare reform Grace Njoki Mulei has narrated what transpired during her dramatic arrest moments after being released on a cash bail of Ksh10,000.
Speaking to the media on Friday, January 24, 2025, Mulei recounted that before her arrest, she recognized a security officer she had previously seen at another hospital.
She approached him and asked if he was following her, but the officer claimed he was attending to a patient.
Mulei continued, stating that a few minutes later, a female police officer and the aforementioned officer approached her, informing her that they needed to take her somewhere.
“I had gone to seek treatment at Ladnan Hospital because I was sick. I saw the security person whom I had earlier seen at the Kenyatta hospital and I even asked him what he was doing there so, I sensed that I was being followed he claimed he had a patient.
“Less than 10 minutes later, he and a lady told me they wanted to take me somewhere I asked them what I had done or where they were taking me they refused to tell me and asked why they were arresting me they refused to let me they said I was not being arrested,” she narrated.
She further added that the officers did not clarify why she was being arrested.
Describing the nature of the arrest, Mulei narrated how she was dragged and carried out of the hospital by force.
“I felt threatened then I asked why are you arresting me they did not clarify after that when I called my son and husband and informed them what was happening they grabbed and took my phone the hospital tried to intervene because I was going for medical treatment.
“The officers carried me they manhandled me, I was carried by force out of the hospital and I was dragged, I was pinched and all through they never told me where they arrested me they insisted I write a statement,” she added.
In addition, Mulei stated categorically that she is a nurse who is fighting for the voiceless patients.
“I am not a political leader, and am not looking for anything am a nurse I just came to fight for the patient who had no voice, even when I went to that office I never addressed anybody I just said,” she stated.
