Gachagua warns middle class who avoid voting and complain afterwards

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged the middle class not to remain passive ahead of 2027, stating their role is important in shaping the nation’s future and sustaining the economy.

Speaking on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at a church service in Kajiado County, Gachagua appealed to professionals and salaried Kenyans, calling on them to step up and participate in governance and national transformation.

“I want to make a passionate appeal to our professionals, the payslip holders, the middle class, the bourgeois, that you cannot stay at home and wait for the rest of Kenya to bring change,” Gachagua stated.

The Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party leader warned that apathy from the middle class could have devastating economic consequences, stressing that this group forms the backbone of Kenya’s economy.

“When you destroy the middle class, you destroy Kenya’s economy, because they are the drivers of our economy,” Gachagua said.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over political disillusionment among the middle class, many of whom have expressed frustration with governance issues and rising living costs. However, Gachagua insisted that the solution lies in greater engagement, not withdrawal.

“The middle class must lead by example. They must go. Just like we are past agencies, the middle class must be part of this transformation,” he said.

According to him, good governance is not only about leaders but also about citizen participation, especially from those with the means, education, and influence to push for reforms.

“When there is good governance, you (the middle class) are the greatest beneficiaries. Because you are the drivers of my economy. When things go wrong, the middle class is incapacitated,” the DCP boss insisted.

Voter’s registration

Gachagua also took the chance to call upon the middle class and Gen Z to turn out for the voter registration.

His call follows former Chief Justice David Maraga’s campaign to enlist 5 million new voters for the 2027 general election.

He said their turnout is part of efforts to beef up the wantam movement to unseat President William Ruto in 2027.

Already, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, set to begin on Monday, September 29, 2025, as part of its preparations for the 2027 General Election.

In a public notice, the commission urged all eligible Kenyans to register at any IEBC constituency office, except in areas currently undergoing by-elections.

“The commission encourages all unregistered citizens to take advantage of the ongoing exercise and register early,” the IEBC stated.

The services available during the CVR exercise include new voter registration, correction or update of voter details, transfer of registration to a new polling station or constituency, and verification of voter information.
