Gachagua urges Wetang’ula to emulate Justin Muturi
By David Nthua, August 27, 2025The Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua has asked the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula to emulate his predecessor, Justin Muturi.
Gachagua, during a one-on-one interview with a local TV station on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, regretted that Wetang’ula had failed to uphold the dignity of the House by openly siding with President William Ruto in political rallies.
According to Gachagua, Muturi set a benchmark during his tenure that proved the independence of Parliament could be preserved even in the face of political pressures.
“Justin Muturi was nominated by TNA to be speaker in 2013 and Jubilee in 2017. That man had an impeccable record; you never saw him in a public rally doing empowerment and singing praise and worship to Uhuru Kenyatta. Muturi regulated debate and allowed everybody to speak,” he said.
Wetang’ula accused of partisanship
Gachagua contrasted this with Wetang’ula’s leadership, claiming the current Speaker has eroded the dignity of Parliament.
“Wetang’ula has become a youth winger for Ruto; he attends empowerment meetings, and he goes to sing praises to William Ruto in public meetings. In that Parliament, Wetang’ula does not allow members who don’t support William Ruto to speak,” Gachagua stated.
“He has eroded the dignity of the National Assembly.”

The remarks are the latest in Gachagua’s sustained criticism of the Kenya Kwanza government, which he accuses of undermining democratic institutions.
For him, Wetang’ula’s alleged bias has contributed to weakening Parliament’s independence, leaving opposition and dissenting voices sidelined.
His words are expected to trigger debate within political circles, particularly as Wetang’ula continues to play a visible role in government initiatives outside Parliament.
As Gachagua intensifies his messaging, it remains to be seen whether his criticism will resonate with legislators or further deepen his isolation from Ruto’s inner circle.
