Gachagua soaks in American history and statesmanship after touring Truman Library
By Ascah Mwango, August 6, 2025Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took a break from the hot political debates and town hall meetings to soak in some cool American history at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri.
In a statement shared via his X account on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Gachagua said the museum visit gave him a moment to reflect on the legacy of one of America’s most influential leaders.
“This morning, in Missouri, we visited the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, to a great resource for an incredible story of the 33rd President of the USA (1945 to 1953),” Gachagua said.
He praised Truman’s leadership during difficult times, noting how the American president helped steer the country’s economy through the transition from war to peace and fought for civil rights.
“President Truman led the American economy in tough times from WarTime to PeaceTime and strongly advanced African-American civil rights and ranked by historians among America’s best Presidents,” he said.
Gachagua described the library as an inspiring place for anyone interested in leadership and history.
“His life and legacy point to an ideal American patriot who served his nation with dedication and truthfulness. An informative, inspirational, educative space is the Truman Library’s Presidential Library to the world,” he stated.
Truman Library and Museum
The Truman Library and Museum tells the story of Harry S. Truman, who became president at the end of World War II and helped shape the post-war world. The museum features photographs, letters, personal items, and even a replica of Truman’s Oval Office.
Visitors also learn about his role at the beginning of the Cold War and his efforts to promote civil rights. Truman and his wife Bess, are buried on the museum grounds.
Earlier that day, Gachagua and his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, arrived in Missouri and were welcomed by members of the Kenyan diaspora at Kansas City International Airport. He shared photos of the warm reception he received and expressed his eagerness to meet Kenyans living in Kansas.
“In our diaspora engagement tour of the USA, we head to Kansas City to a warm welcome by Kenyans living and working in Kansas. Safely arrived at Kansas City International Airport, Missouri. We are looking forward to a great conversation on our nation, Kenya,” he said.
Missouri is the fifth state Gachagua has visited since he began his tour on July 9, 2025. The former deputy president has already been to Washington, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Texas. In each location, he has held town hall meetings and interactive forums with Kenyans living abroad.
The tour is Gachagua’s first international trip since he was impeached on October 17, 2024. Through the trip, he has continued to engage with the diaspora community, sharing ideas on Kenya’s development and listening to their concerns.
