A writer has been arraigned in court for defrauding former National Assembly Speaker Francis Ole Kaparo over Sh2.7 million by falsely pretending he would pen his biography.

Mr Samuel Ochieng Okelo is alleged to have lied to Kaparo that he would publish based on the former Speaker’s life titled Order! Order! Order!.

The suspect, who appeared before a Nairobi court on Monday, pleaded not guilty to one count of obtaining money by false pretenses.

Mr Okelo was accused that on February 17, 2017 and February 8, 2018, in Nairobi County and jointly with others not before court, that he obtained the said Sh2.7 million from Kaparo with intent to defraud.

In mitigation, his lawyer David Ayuo told the court that the accused’s father was unwell until he passed on, and being the only son, he had to take care of his father.

The accused further told the court that the books are in a container in Mombasa awaiting clearance.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi granted Mr Okelo a cash bail of Sh200,000 or Sh500,000 bond pending trial.
