Elgeyo Marakwet landslide death toll rises to 39

The death toll from the devastating landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County has risen to 39, according to the latest update from the Office of the Government Spokesperson.

The number of missing persons has reduced from 10 to 9, while six people remain hospitalised.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, in the 11th update of the ongoing tragedy, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, said recovery efforts were still underway as emergency teams combed through the affected areas in Kerio Valley, Embobut, and Upper Sambirir.

“The government remains committed to ensuring that every missing person is accounted for and that every affected family receives full support,” Mwaura stated.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families, describing the tragedy as immensely sorrowful, and assured continued assistance to those displaced and mourning.

Mass burials planned

The government announced that burial plans were already in progress. A grandmother and her grandchild from the Kibendo area in Keiyo North will be laid to rest on Friday, November 14, 2025.

A mass funeral service and burial for victims from Kerio Valley will take place on Friday, November 21, 2025, followed by burials for those from Embobut and Upper Sambirir on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

The government had earlier assured support to affected families.

To aid the victims and facilitate resettlement, the government has organised a national fundraiser (harambee) on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at AIC Milimani Church in Nairobi from 4:00 p.m.

The funds will support recovery, relocation, and rehabilitation programmes for affected families.

“The government stands with the people of Elgeyo Marakwet during this dark hour,” Mwaura emphasised, adding that long-term plans are underway to rebuild livelihoods and enhance community safety in the region.

He reiterated that no family affected by the tragedy will be left behind.
