The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) says it raided Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s homes in Kitisuru-Nairobi and Kerugoya-Kirinyaga in search of crucial documents, which could help the agency establish whether the county chief embezzled Ksh23 million under the pretext that she and her juniors made foreign trips.
Twalib Mbarak, the CEO of EACC, said in a statement on Thursday, August 20, that the Commission got orders from the Nyeri Magistrate’s Court to search the governor’s homes.
“EACC is in the process of establishing whether the trips were actually undertaken and whether the documents supporting disbursement of Ksh23 million to county officials were genuine,” said Mbarak.
In the lead up to Waiguru’s impeachment on June 9, 2020, Kirinyaga MCAs accused Waiguru of awarding herself Ksh10.6 million in imprests as travel allowances for foreign trips that she never made.
