Members of the Senate were treated to comic relief during an afternoon parliamentary session after Murang’a County senator Irungu Kang’ata was accused of trying to address the house from an inappropriate location according to Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, if a viral video doing rounds social media is something to go about.

A voice was heard saying that Kang’ata was speaking from the famous city nightclub Sabina Joy.

According to the video, senators broke into laughter, considering that Sabina Joy is a renowned nightclub along Nairobi’s Moi Avenue. The entertainment joint is mainly known as a brothel, a reason that stirred more laughter in the Lusaka-led session.

When the lawmaker joined the house proceedings through its online platform, just moments after nominated senator Beatrice Kwamboka had been granted chance to address the house, the speaker implored him to switch on his camera as dictated by the house regulations.

“Mr. Speaker I’m here. I’m online, my video is on. Mr. Speaker I’m online,” Kang’ata is heard saying.

The speaker remained incessant that the Ruto-allied lawmaker had to switch on his camera in line with the set regulations.

After switching on his camera as instructed, a voice, whose identity we have not established, seemingly reacting to the nature of the background of Kang’ata’s location, accused him of addressing the house from a bar along Thika Road before alleging that it was indeed from Sabina Joy.

“Mr. Speaker he is on Thika Highway drinking… Mr. Speaker he is in a bar. Mr Speaker he is in Sabina Joy,” the unidentified senator insisted.

A cornered Kang’ata tried to absolve himself from the allegations, insisting that he was in his office but Lusaka dismissed him, stating that he could not speak from the ‘inappropriate’ location.

“No no no that is not an office Senator Kang’ata. I’m sorry we cannot allow that. The rules are very clear on where you can be,” Lusaka said.
