A detective who allegedly raped a woman in his office at the Manyatta Police Station has been charged at Embu Law Courts.

The officer, Jervasio Njeru, denied raping a 42-year-old woman.

He also denied a second count of acting indecently with an adult.

The prosecution told the court that the officer, attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, committed the alleged offences on May 31, 2020, at the police station in Embu North Sub-County.

The prosecution asked the court to deny the accused bond on the ground that being a senior police officer, he would interfere with the witnesses who are junior police officers who were on duty when the woman was raped.

But his lawyer Momanyi Gichuki opposed the prosecution’s request, telling the court that his client was no longer a police officer following his dismissal from the service after the alleged offence.

However, in his ruling, Embu Chief Magistrate Maxwell Gicheru ordered the suspect to be released on Sh500, 000 bond with a surety of similar amount and the matter to be heard on June 16.

The officer is accused of raping the woman while interrogating her over allegations that she had received money by false pretence from one Stephen Gathiru.

At the police station, the woman was released from custody on a free bond and was required to report to the officer the following day for interrogation when the incident allegedly occurred.

She is said to have escaped from the officer and reported the matter to the same police station and was later taken to the Embu Level Five Hospital where she is receiving treatment.
