2025 by-election bribery claims

The ongoing by-elections have been marred by voter bribery claims, with officials of some political parties getting chased away from the polling stations by angry residents.

Tension flared at Mung’ala Polling Station in Mumbuni North Ward, Machakos County, on Thursday, November 27, 2025, after residents effected a dramatic citizen arrest of a man believed to be a senior Wiper Patriotic Front Party official, Paul Museku, accusing him of engaging in voter bribery.

According to a statement issued via social media by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary and former Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, the incident unfolded on the sidelines of Thursday’s by-election, where voters claimed to have caught the former Mumbuni North Member of the County Assembly (MCA) attempting to influence the outcome by distributing cash to selected individuals.

“CITIZEN ARREST: Senior Wiper Party leader Mr. Paul Museku arrested by Wananchi after he was found near Mung’ala polling station, bribing voters. Wananchi have had enough of election malpractices and want free and fair elections,” Mutua wrote on X.

“Accompanied by other leaders this morning, we joined Harrison Wambua Mutuku, the Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate in the Mumbuni North Ward by-elections, as he cast his vote at Kasinga Primary School. We are confident that Harrison will emerge victorious and usher in a new era of honest, development-focused leadership for the people of Mumbuni North,” Mutua wrote on his official X account.
