By William Muthama, August 29, 2025Kericho Governor Eric Mutai will on Friday, August 29, know his fate after a two-day intense Senate session that saw him defend himself against allegations of gross misconduct as Members of the County Assembly castigated his leadership.
In a statement sent on Friday, August 29, 2025, the Senate confirmed it will deliberate and consider the motion by the Kericho County Assembly seeking Mutai’s removal from office through impeachment.
“Kericho County Governor (Dr.) Eric Mutai will know his fate today as the Senate deliberates and considers a motion by Kericho County Assembly proposing his removal from office through impeachment.”Senate stated
The Senate impeachment process comes, after on Friday, August 15, 2025, when 33 MCAs voted in favour of the motion to oust the governor, accusing him of abuse of office, gross violation of the Constitution, and mismanagement of county resources.
The County Assembly passed the motion with a simple majority, clearing the way for the matter to be forwarded to the Senate for determination.
Senators weigh evidence
During the Senate sessions, Governor Mutai strongly defended his record, insisting that the accusations levelled against him were politically motivated.
He argued that his administration had delivered on key projects, particularly in healthcare and infrastructure, and that the impeachment attempt was orchestrated by political rivals seeking to derail his development agenda.

However, Kericho MCAs maintained that the governor had failed to account for millions of shillings in county funds and had sidelined oversight institutions.
They urged the Senate to uphold their decision, describing Mutai as unfit to continue holding office.
High political stakes
The impeachment battle has drawn national attention, with observers noting that the outcome could set a precedent for how county leaders are held accountable.
If the Senate upholds the impeachment motion by a majority of senators, Mutai will be removed from office, paving the way for his deputy to assume the governorship.
If the motion fails, Mutai will survive but face renewed pressure to reconcile with the county assembly and restore public trust.
All eyes are now on the Senate chambers in Nairobi as the country awaits a landmark ruling on the fate of Governor Eric Mutai.
