CS Wahome vows to fundraise for family which lost 14 in Kikopey crash

Lands Cabinet Secretary (CS), Alice Wahome, has vowed to step in and help fundraise for the family which lost 14 members in the tragic Kikopey road accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.

Speaking on Saturday, October 4, 2025, after attending the memorial service at Gacharage Grounds in Kandara Constituency, Murang’a County, CS Wahome indicated that the initial money raised by the family had been depleted in the funeral arrangement.

Wahome indicated that the tragic accident had robbed some of the families’ breadwinners, leaving children destitute, prompting her to step in and help them.

“I have proposed to the family, and this is my commitment, on behalf of the government, we shall come here on 25th, so that we can raise some money, because what we raised throughout the week is sufficient for the funeral arrangements of the 14 people, including their transport. And therefore, we don’t want to leave and then leave these young children. Most of the families have left very young children between, I think, three years and 11 years,” she stated.

Money for basic needs

The CS emphasised that the fundraiser needs to be held as soon as possible so that the orphaned children can get support for their education and other basic needs.

Wahome thus implored the family to allow her to organise a fundraiser and invite some government officials to support the bereaved family.

“And therefore, there is an urgent need to raise some money for food, basically for immediate care and nurturing of the young ones. And therefore, I’ll be leading a fundraiser in the next maybe two, three weeks. My proposal to the family, if it is accepted, is that we come back here on the 25th of October, which is a Saturday afternoon, so that we raise a little more money for purposes of support system and supporting the children,” she stated.

“And I’m sure with that kind of arrangement, maybe the pain and the loss will be, you know,a bit lighter. And so that we also don’t lose the children in terms of their, you know, continued education. And of course, looking after them, you know, food, their daily needs, is quite a challenge.”

The memorial service

The memorial service was held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, where different leaders joined the family in Kandara.

The day began with a heart-wrenching procession as 14 hearses, each carrying a casket of the victims, left Githumu Funeral Home in a slow convoy towards Gacharage Grounds.

Along the route, residents lined the road, waving white handkerchiefs and whispering prayers as the vehicles passed, a sight that captured the collective grief gripping the region.

Relatives and friends then later read their emotional tributes, breaking down midway.

The fourteen were among sixteen people who lost their lives in the horrific crash that occurred on Sunday, September 28, 2025, near Kikopey in Gilgil.
