The Council of Governors (CoG) led by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, has come out strongly to condemn Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial remarks about the late Raila Odinga’s death.

Through a press statement shared on X on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the CoG expressed deep disappointment, describing Kahiga’s comments as reckless, insensitive, and unbecoming of a leader of his stature.

“The Council of Governors registers its deep disappointment with the unfortunate utterances by Governor Kahiga Mutahi of Nyeri County,” the statement read.

“We wish to disassociate in toto with the sentiments of Governor Kahiga and note that those are personal remarks that do not reflect or represent the views of the Council of Governors, especially at this time of deep mourning.”

The council criticised Kahiga for politicising Raila’s death and using insensitive language that, according to the statement, “celebrates the loss of a national hero.”

“We note that the comments are indeed reckless, insensitive, sad and unfortunate. It is inhumane and unacceptable to celebrate his death on account of perceived political calculations,” Abdullahi said.

The council further reminded Kenyans that Raila Odinga’s contributions to Kenya’s history and democracy are undeniable, noting that his role in shaping the country’s governance framework should never be trivialised.

“Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga was and will forever remain a statesman whose contributions are embedded in the annals of our country’s history. He was not only the architect and father of devolution but its key protector and ardent supporter,” the statement continued.

Urgent CoG meeting called

Governor Abdullahi revealed that the council had convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the matter and issue a further directive.

“In light of the above, I have convened an urgent Extra-Ordinary Council Meeting to be held tomorrow morning to deliberate on these unfortunate utterances, and a further statement will follow,” Abdullahi stated.

Kahiga’s remarks, made at a burial in Nyeri, have triggered outrage nationwide.

The governor was captured, suggesting that Raila’s death was “God’s plan” to “level the political field,” a statement that leaders across the political divide have described as “shameful and divisive.”

The CoG’s condemnation adds to growing calls for Kahiga to apologise or face disciplinary action, marking yet another strong rebuke from Kenya’s top leadership over his remarks.
