Cherargei: Gachagua was impeached, he cannot run again
By Isaiah Cheruiyot, September 14, 2025Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has insisted that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stands impeached and is therefore ineligible to vie for any political office, including the presidency.
Speaking during a public address in Chesumei Constituency, Nandi County, on Sunday, September 14, 2025, Cherargei, a lawyer by profession, explained that under the Constitution of Kenya, anyone impeached cannot be cleared to contest in elections.
He also expressed questions on why Gachagua’s name continues to be mentioned in the 2027 presidential race.
“Ex-DP Gachagua was impeached; he cannot run again. I do not understand why he considers himself a viable candidate. The 2010 Constitution says once you are impeached, you cannot run in any public office,” Cherargei remarked.
Gachagua had earlier explained why he is eligible to run for the presidency despite ongoing court battles.
His comments follow Gachagua’s Mt. Kenya tour, during which the former DP claimed he had the best chance of defeating President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
“I think I have the best chances to be President. I am the best to send this government home,” Gachagua said while in Karatina.

Despite Cherargei’s remarks, a section of leaders from the Mt. Kenya region has endorsed his presidential bid.
Cherargei also took aim at Gachagua’s eligibility for other roles, noting he could not even serve as chairperson of a funeral planning committee.
“Leave alone to run for president, Gachagua cannot be appointed even to the committee in planning a befitting send-off in a family which lost their kin,” Cherargei stated.
The senator added that Gachagua had previously been impeached for promoting tribalism, with his case already concluded in both the National Assembly and the Senate.
“We have seen him lecturing the president on who can be invited to the State House.
However, the second deputy president also said that he would sacrifice his ambition if the formula did not favour him in sending William Ruto home,
The Head of State has the power to engage everyone. What is wrong with Kenyans meeting their president? We encourage the president to keep engaging citizens from all over,” he added.
Cherargei concluded by urging Kenyans to support President Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027, highlighting the government’s achievements over the past three years.
“The opposition team should prepare for a resounding defeat. Ruto is a two-term president. The Kenya Kwanza government has done a lot,” he noted.
