The Bodaboda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) has issued a stern warning to riders following the torching of a vehicle on Thika Road after a collision with a bodaboda rider.

In a statement issued via its official X account on the night of Saturday, August 16, 2025, BAK National Executive Chairman Kevin Mubadi condemned the act as “unacceptable” and a threat to efforts aimed at professionalising the industry.

He said that while the association sympathises with the injured rider, violence and destruction of property cannot be justified.

“The Bodaboda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) strongly condemns the unfortunate incident on Thika Road where a vehicle was torched following a collision with a bodaboda rider. While we deeply sympathise with the rider involved in the accident, we firmly reiterate that violence, destruction of property, and taking the law into one’s own hands are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the statement read in part.

Discipline

BAK has called on riders nationwide to maintain discipline, respect the law, and seek justice through proper channels to protect the sector’s image and ensure road safety.

The association has further called for the arrest and prosecution of all the individuals involved in the incident so they can serve as an example.

“BAK confirms that all individuals involved in this unfortunate act of lawlessness must be arrested and prosecuted to serve as an example. Such behaviour not only tarnishes the image of our sector but also endangers the lives of innocent Kenyans and undermines efforts to professionalise the bodaboda industry,” BAK stated.

“As an association, we emphasise that we do not advocate for chaos after an accident. Proper legal and safety procedures must always be followed. Justice must be sought through lawful channels. In case of accidents, the police, medical services, and insurance processes must be allowed to take their course. Peace, safety, and discipline remain at the core of BAK’s mission in transforming the bodaboda sector.”

Adding: “We urge all bodaboda riders across the country to exercise restraint, respect the law, and avoid actions that may escalate conflicts or bring disrepute to the sector. We also call upon law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in handling this matter. Together, we can build a safer and more respected bodaboda industry in Kenya.”
