Babu Owino affirms loyalty to ODM amid speculation over his political future

Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, has firmly denied claims that he has abandoned the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

His clarification comes in response to growing public speculation regarding his political allegiance, particularly after his conspicuous absence from recent ODM functions and his vocal criticism of the broad-based government.

Speaking during an interview on a local television station on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Owino sought to set the record straight, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to ODM, while acknowledging that he may not always agree with every decision made by the party leadership.

“I have not left ODM. We are not fighting the party or its leadership. What we are doing is holding the government accountable, something I believe even our party leader, Raila Odinga, would support,” the legislator stated.

The MP emphasised that his recent criticism of the government should not be misinterpreted as political rebellion or disloyalty to his party.

According to him, the duty of a Member of Parliament is not only to represent the people but also to provide oversight and ensure that the government remains transparent and accountable to citizens.

“We only want the government to fulfil the promises it made to Kenyans during the campaign period. When the government fails to deliver or engages in corruption, it is our constitutional role to speak up. Silence is not an option when Kenyans are suffering,” Owino said.

Owino also hinted that his public expressions of dissent reflect the frustrations of many young leaders within the party who feel that critical national issues are not being addressed adequately. He reiterated, however, that these frustrations should not be mistaken for political disloyalty.

“Raila Odinga has always stood for justice, accountability, and the voice of the people. What we are doing is in line with those values,” he added.

The lawmaker quelled rumours about a possible political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election, even as he continues to bare knuckle the government over a lack of accountability and transparency.

He has already signalled his plans to vie for the Nairobi County gubernatorial seat in the general polls.
