Alfred Mutua defends Ruto’s presidency amid renewed criticisms
By Paulette Mboga, November 3, 2025Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has come out in defence of President William Ruto, saying Kenyans should be more patient with the government.
Mutua, while addressing the press on Monday, November 3, 2025, argued that Kenyans have a habit of criticising leaders too early in their terms before they deliver on their promises.
Speaking about the pattern of public criticism against past administrations, Mutua reminded citizens that former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta also faced similar backlash during their first years in office. He said people tend to judge leaders too quickly, only to later praise them when their achievements become clear.
Mutua said, “Siasa nzuri ni siasa ya maendeleo. Wakati mimi nilikua nafanya kazi na mwai kibaki, baada ya miaka miwili ikibaki, watu walisema kibaki must go. Waka andamana wakasema kibaki bure kabisa. Wakasema analala hakuna kitu anafanya. Wakamkemea na kibaki akajikakamua tu kwa sababu wakenya wanapenda kupiga kelele.”

He added that the same situation repeated itself during Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency. “Kibaki sasa wanasema Kibaki is the best president Kenya has ever had. Uhuru hivyo hivyo tu, wakaanza kusema hakuna barabara itakua mahali. Unaelewa? Sasa wanakemea William Ruto,” he said.

Calls for patience with Ruto
Mutua urged Kenyans to give President Ruto enough time to implement his development plans instead of rushing to criticise him. He said it has only been three years since the Ruto administration came into power, and it is too early to judge its performance.
“Miaka miwili wanasema Ruto sijui nini nini kwa sababu we are not patient,” Mutua said, adding that good leadership and progress take time. He encouraged citizens to focus on supporting the government’s development agenda instead of constant complaints.
Mutua’s remarks come amid growing criticism of the government over the rising cost of living and unfulfilled promises. However, he insisted that meaningful change cannot happen overnight and that Kenyans should allow the president to work without unnecessary pressure.
The CS’s message appeared aimed at calming political frustrations and reminding citizens of past experiences where initial criticism turned into later praise. Mutua maintained that “siasa nzuri ni siasa ya maendeleo,” meaning true politics should focus on progress and patience rather than constant fault-finding.
