Fourteen Kenyan truck drivers are among 43 people who have tested positive for coronavirus in Uganda, the country’s Ministry of Health says.

Besides the 14 Kenyans, 17 Ugandan nationals, five Tanzanian citizens, two Burundians and a truck driver whose nationality is unknown made up the remaining 29 COVID-19 cases.

The new infections push Uganda’s coronavirus tally to 203.

President Yoweri Museveni said he won’t prohibit truck drivers from entering Uganda despite a spike in coronavirus cases in the country being attributed to the long distance transporters.

Earlier this week, Museveni, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and other East African Heads of State met via skype and resolved that all truck drivers plying East Africa must be tested for coronavirus before leaving for their destinations, and that they must be provided with certificates indicating their coronavirus statuses.

The certs, the presidents agreed, will be displayed by the drivers as they enter the countries through the border points.
