The government has gazetted the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to assist the National Police Service amid ongoing protests against the Finance Bill 2024.

In the gazette notice dated Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Cabinet Secretary for Defence Aden Duale said the government called upon the KDF to support in maintaining order after the ‘violent’ protests escalated leading to the destruction of critical government infrastructure

“Pursuant to Article 241 (3) (b) of the Constitution of Kenya as read with sections 31 (1) (a), 31 (1) (c), 33 (1), 34 (1) and 34 (2) of the Kenya Defence Forces Act, (Cap. 199), the Kenya Defence Forces is deployed on the 25th June, 2024 in support of the National Police Service in response to the security emergency caused by the ongoing violent protests in various parts of the Republic of Kenya resulting in destruction and breaching of critical infrastructure,”

The Finance Bill 2024 has been a source of contention, sparking protests across the country.

These demonstrations, which began on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, reached their third day today with Kenyans in most parts of the country demonstrating.

Protests, parliament breached

Earlier, chaos erupted as protesters caused massive destruction and vandalism within Parliament buildings.

Several protesters were reportedly shot during the confrontation. Inside Parliament, chairs in the lounge area were turned upside-down, windows shattered, and walls destroyed.

Protests were not limited to Nairobi; similar demonstrations erupted across the country in Nakuru, Mombasa, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega, and Meru, among other regions.

The situation remains tense as police resort to violence on the anti-tax protesters.

The demonstrators are demanding a complete rejection of the Finance Bill 2024, calling for accountability in government, an end to corruption, and the publication of all state debts.
